hundred years. They were overwhelmingly in favor of exercise. Where then did a doctor like Peter J. Steincrohn, M.D., get the ideas that he voices to the public through his books and syndicated columns in the newspapers? Why do publishers let a man like this offer his erroneous beliefs that exercise is not necessary? If only the 21 people mentioned early in this article as reported by a modern doctor, were saved foot and leg amputation, that alone would prove the value of exercise. Here was a case of people being saved from great pain, and loss of limbs through the mildest form of exercise, very slow walking. If a little exercise helps so greatly isn't it reasonable to believe that more exercise of a progressive nature will be of much greater benefit. Dr. Steincrohn wrote a book called You Don't Have to Exercise. He admits that walking and puttering around the garden has its benefits but he says that when you reach forty you should exercise no more than rocking on your chair on the porch and twiddling your thumbs. There should be a law against such erroneous tripe. Its been know for thousands of years that exercise is a great healer. Dr. Steincrohn wrote "Unfortu-

nately we can do nothing but discuss the weather but we can do something about exercise. We can drop it after we reach 40. Remember that exercise is not one of life's necessities. America has grown too exercise conscious during the past fifty years. Twiddling your thumbs as you sit quietly in a rocking chair is all the exercise you require after 40. This, then, is the creed you must learn if you expect to withstand the raised eyebrows and whispered comments of your athletic friends as they pass you by lying there in your hammock, as you sip your whiskey and soda, and turn the leaves of the novel you are reading. You can look up as they pass, weighted down with sports paraphernalia and you must be able to say smilingly, without feeling conscience stricken, "have a good time, boys." "

What tripe! The doctor will soon have a patient in the thumb twiddler, and the whiskey and soda drinker, the "athletic friends" who pass, will live a healthy, happy, longer than normal life, and enjoy life as they live it. When a man or woman is forty, it should be just the half-way point in life. The first half has been spent with study, with preparation for life, at 25 to 30, a man is really getting into the swing of following his business or profession. According to Dr. Steincrohn's theory, he

should have ten or fifteen years to profit by his study and training and then lie in the hammock and twiddle his thumbs.

Dr. Steincrohn at least was honest in the following respect: Quoting from his book, Forget. Your Age, on page 20 he writes, "So if you want living examples who die too early, of specimens of humanity who don't live right, look to your physician. Sleepless, vacationless, often hungry (taking his sandwich on the run), overworking, overstraining, exhausted and worn out, here is the source of your advice. Nevertheless the wisdom is there. The fact that his work precludes his living normally is no reason that you should ignore his advice. Study how your doctor lives and go do the opposite, if you would live long."

That's good advice. Do just the opposite of what Dr. Steincrohn says, if you want to live long, be well, successful and happy.

All the doctors need do to thrive on their hard and intensive, irregular lives, is to stop smoking, stop drinking, even tea and coffee, get one good meal a day, and take time for some progressive exercise one to three times a week. Exercise covers a lot of sins, omissions and commissions. With progressive weight training, which would re(Continued on page 44)
